Ask A Question

Health Iowa staff members make every effort to address as many questions as possible in a timely manner, however, not all questions are answered. Written responses are general in nature and should not be used as specific diagnoses or treatment of conditions. Search the Q&A to see if your question has already been answered.

If you have a specific, personal health issue, contact your healthcare provider. University of Iowa students can call 335-8394 to schedule an appointment.

What happens if you’re pregnant and it just turns out all the classes left to major are bio and chem. Classes with a lab component? Can you take the labs? Can you take measures to avoid damage to your child? Do you drop out?

Congratulations on your pregnancy! Good news – all laboratories have safety standards that should make it safe for a pregnant woman to work. But, we would recommend that you address the issue with BOTH your instructor for the course and your obstetrician/healthcare provider who is overseeing your care. Don’t let your pregnancy stop you from finishing school. Most pregnant women can continue with their daily activities right up until birth. Be sure you get plenty of rest, eat healthy and get a moderate amount of activity. The better you take care of your body, the healthier your baby will be. Bring on the classes!
